Co-operative movement had played a vital role in the uplift of rural economy in Kerala. It had relieved the the farming community from the cliches of money lenders created developmental opportunities . It had spread into the areas of credit, the agriculture financing, procurement of agriculture produce, agriculture marketing, education and health. When the state of Travancore Cochin had come to existence in 1949 itself efforts had been made to strengthen the  co-operative sector. A new co-operative act had come in to existence in 1951. Shri : K. M. Chandy had been in the forefront of co-operative movement in Kerala. Several leading co-operative institutions owe their existence and birth to Shri Chandy. In 1949 he had organised the Meenachil Taluk Co-operative union and had been the president of the co-operative union for two decades. Under the auspices of the Taluk union several co-operative service societies had been organised in the Taluk. He had founded the’Meenachil Co-operative Land Mortgage Bank’ and the’ Palai Co-operative Marketing Society. The Marketing Society initially had procured the agriculture produce like pepper, ginger and other hill products from farmers so that farmers could get fair prices for their produce. The Society had provided the farmers the agricultural implements and fertilizers. Later, when natural rubber had become a major commodity produce in large parts of the Kerala, price of natural rubber had fallen and farmers were in distress. The Pala Marketing Society had started procurement of rubber from farmers and mitigated the distress. The Pala Marketing Society had become a major rubber marketing society of Kerala state. Shri : K. M. Chandy had been the President of the Society till 1972, when he had become the Chairman of the Rubber Board. Under the stewardship of Prof: Chandy it had become a major financially viable institution with huge assets. His far reaching vision had enabled the society to venture into several new programmes. The foundation for a crumb rubber factory with Malaysian technology had been laid during his tenure. He had served as Director of Kottayam District Co-operative Bank, Kerala State Co- operative Bank and The State Marketing Federation. Prof: K. M. Chandy had founded The Kerala State Rubber Marketing Federation to mitigate the woes of rubber marketing societies engaged in the procurement of rubber from farmers.
